Why We Call Wednesday 'Hump Day'

The middle of the workweek, Wednesday, is commonly referred to as 'Hump Day.' But why do we call it that?
The reason Wednesday is nicknamed Hump Day is that it signifies getting over the hump of the week and progressing towards the weekend. The first half of the workweek, Monday and Tuesday, is the uphill climb. So Wednesday, being the middle day, is the peak - or the hump. After Wednesday, it's all downhill towards Saturday and Sunday.
Crossing the hump of Wednesday gives a psychological boost that the week is nearly half over. Even though there are still two work days left until the weekend, reaching Hump Day provides a sense of accomplishment and momentum. The week feels like it's progressing and the countdown to leisure time begins.
The term Hump Day originated in the United States during the mid-1900s. Given that Americans typically have a 5-day, 40-hour workweek from Monday to Friday, Wednesday emerged as a day to look forward to - a day of respite and renewed motivation. The label 'Hump Day' reflects this positive 'over the hump' sentiment.
In some work cultures, people celebrate getting over the hump by taking more frequent breaks on Wednesday or engaging in team bonding. Even small rituals to mark the occasion can make the day feel more special and help boost workweek productivity and morale.
So there you have it, the meaning behind why we call Wednesday 'Hump Day.' The latter half of the workweek is in sight and weekend freedom inches closer! Have a happy Hump Day.
